The City of Sydney recently opened the first community hub – the Banga Community Shed – dedicated to the reuse and repair of household electronics.

Located in Green Square, the Banga Community Shed is a new community space for the growing number of inner-city residents who are keen to tinker, create and learn new skills in the workshop.

Inspired by the men’s shed movement, the Banga Community Shed was designed to encourage a sense of community. It features a tool library and hosts a weekly repair café, electronic skills workshops and a tagging and testing service.

Its name is fitting – Banga means ‘make’ or ‘do’ in the Gadigal language, perfect for a building that will host workshops for people to learn how to repair and reuse electronic items that may otherwise go to landfill.

You will find the Banga Community Shed located in the former pathology building of the historic South Sydney Hospital site, within the inner-city neighbourhood’s award-winning Joynton Avenue cultural precinct.

The community shed is run by charity co-operative, The Bower. The Bower Group aims to support men and women achieve good health and wellbeing through a range of practical activities – just like those traditionally carried out in backyard sheds.

The Banga Community Shed was officially opened by Lord Mayor Clover Moore and The Bower general manager, Guido Verbist, on Saturday 2 March 2018.
