Luxe look for less

Get that glossy magazine look (on a budget) with a few simple home-styling steps.

You don’t have to spend a fortune to give your apartment a luxurious feel. There are plenty of home styling ideas to help breathe new life into your home without breaking the budget.

There are plenty of websites that offer anything from affordable art and décor to bed linen and contemporary furniture pieces, and physical homeware stores you can peruse to get some inspiration on the latest looks.

You can also pick up great ideas by following your favourite stores, designers, creative talents and homeware magazines on social media channels, such as Instagram, for up-to-the-minute trends and how to apply them to your home.

Giving your home a makeover doesn’t have to mean spending money on expensive furniture, one-off art pieces and pricey home décor.

You can bring life to small spaces, warmth to open planned living areas and character to tired corners with these top tips from Amy Frost, Principal Interior Stylist at Valiant. Here are her five top home styling tips:

Upgrade your cushions

Cushions lift the look of a room by adding warmth, comfort and style. But before making any changes, there’s something simple you can do to offer a fresh feel. Frost recommends you swap out polyester cushion infills for feather fills for a contemporary look.

“Feather fill cushions sit nicer and tend to hold a better shape,” she says.

Layer up with fabrics

Introducing fabrics to your room is a simple way to bring your room to life.

“Splash fabrics around, such as velvets and linen on armchairs and cushions,” Frost says. “Velvets have an expensive a luxe feel, as does linen. By using these fabrics and layering the interior has a sense of glamour.”

Refresh your walls

Think about giving your apartment walls a new look using art. There are loads of inspiring and affordable art pieces to browse online that will help you narrow down the look you love. Or, think about working with what you already have. If you find a cheap frame you love, buy as many as you can afford and add/switch out art whenever you’re in the mood.

“Framed art pieces always make a great statement,” says Frost.

Affordable accents

Lift your space by adding some character and accents to your home – a little can go a long way.

Frost recommends incorporating classic shapes and metallic finishes to add a glamorous and luxe feel.

Think about balance and proportions

Groupings are your friend. A bongo drum might look like clutter on its own, but group it with a ceramic tile, a souvenir postcard, and a seashell, and you’ve got yourself a vignette.

Frost says keeping things in balance is also a good strategy when it comes to styling your room.

“Try and create symmetry with your layout and styling. For example, two lamps either side of a sideboard will always give a luxe formal feel.”

With a few simple touches and a bit of planning, you can have a magazine-worthy home with an inviting feel.
