September is time to celebrate Father’s Day

The first Sunday of September, is Father’s Day. Well, for dads living in Australia, New Zealand, Fiji and Papua New Guinea it is.

But the most common time of year used to celebrate Father’s Day worldwide is the third Sunday in June, a tradition deriving from the US and now followed in more than 70 countries.

In other countries, especially within Europe and Latin America, fathers are honored on St. Joseph’s Day, a traditional Catholic holiday that falls on March 19.

Not only is Father’s Day celebrated at different times of the year worldwide, the customs and traditions of Father’s Day around the world differ greatly too.

The origin of Father’s Day is debatable. Scholars believe the origin of Father’s Day is not a latest phenomenon, as many believe it to be. They claim the tradition of Father’s Day can be traced in the ruins of Babylon.

Regardless of its origin, the Festivus of the Father is an opportunity to thank our fathers and pay tribute to them. But not just our fathers. These days it is not uncommon for Father’s Day cards or gifts to be given to male influencers in our lives such as grandfathers, uncles, stepfathers or anyone else who assumes the role of a father.

This Father’s Day we hope you took some time out to honour and pay respect to your father, or father figures in your life, and celebrate Father’s Day with your loved ones.
